Obtain Domicile Certificate in Assam

A domicile certificate is an essential document for the residents of any State since it helps obtain a number of benefits or availing services such as admissions in educational institutions, employment, scholarships, and the like. The procedure for obtaining a domicile certificate is not cumbersome, but it is different for each state.

Procedure for obtaining a domicile certificate in Assam: 

The domicile certificates of Assam are issued under the authority of the Deputy Commissioner of the State. The following is the eligibility criteria for an applicant of the domicile certificate in Assam:

  • The applicant must be holding or owning land in Assam.
  • The applicant has to be a resident of Assam for at least 20 years.
  • The ancestors and the applicant's parents must have resided in the State of Assam for at least fifty years, or their guardian needs to have resided in the state for at least 20 years.

Documents to be Furnished:

Through the course of the application, the applicant has to furnish certain documents, which are listed as follows: 

  • The applicant has to provide their certificate of birth as proof of birth.
  • The applicant has to provide a certificate proof of graduating school or the “School Leaving Certificate”, or the admit card thereof.
  • The applicant has to provide their proof of residence in address proof. This can be done by providing any valid address proof such as a Driving License, Aadhaar card, ration card, or passport belonging to the applicant.
  • The applicant has to furnish title deeds or any related document further if they own any immovable property in the State of Assam, along with their receipts of Land Revenue paid to date.
  • The applicant must also provide documents supporting that their ancestors and/or parents have been residents of Assam for at least 50 years. If this does not apply, the applicant needs to prove that the applicant has a guardian residing in the state for at least 20 years. 
  • The applicant needs to furnish their voter ID for Assam. 
  • The applicant further has to provide one colored passport size photograph of themselves.

Time period: The applicant shall receive the domicile certificate within two weeks (14 days) from the date of making the application.

Fees: The applicant is required to pay thirty rupees for each copy of the domicile certificate. 

Online Procedure for Application in Assam:

  • The applicant has to visit the official website of the Government of Assam.
  • From the category of Online E-services, the applicant needs to select the downloadable forms option.
  • The domicile certification application form is the same as the permanent resident certificate, downloaded from the said page.
  • The applicant then needs to fill in all the details specified in the application form. They further need to upload all the requisite documents that have been discussed earlier.
  • Upon filing the supplication form, the same needs to be submitted to the Office of the Chief Information Officer, as specified, and the applicant would be granted an acknowledgment number thereon.
  • The applicant can track the application status and download the domicile certificate online using the acknowledgment number he received.
