What is the process for FSSAI License Renewal?

The FSSAI license which is required by the Food Business Operators (FBO) is valid from 1 to 5 years as selected by the FBO. Thus after the expiry of such a period, the FBO must apply for renewal within a stipulated time period to avoid penalty and run his business smoothly.

Significance of FSSAI License Renewal:

  • As per the law, any FBO running its business without a license will be liable for a penalty.
  • The FSSAI license acts as a measure for ensuring the proper quality of the food articles being provided by the FBO.
  • Obtaining the license helps the business operator to expand his reach in the market and also secure customer satisfaction.
  • The license also aids the authorities to keep an eye on the food business, in order to protect the customer consuming the food articles. 

Time to apply for FSSAI License Renewal:

  • The FBO must apply for renewal of License(s)/Registration Certificate 180 Days prior to the expiry of the License. 
  • If the License(s)/Registration Certificate has expired as of date, the renewal application cannot be filed.
  • Once the License(s)/Registration Certificate has expired, FBO needs to file a new application.
  • The FBO only has to pay the renewal fees if the renewal application is processed 30 days prior to the expiration of the License(s)/Registration Certificate. After such expiry of such 30 days, a fine of Rs.100 per day will be charged along with the renewal fees.

Time to obtain a renewed Basic Registration/Central License/State License:

The time span in which the renewed Registration/ License can be received by the FBO is:

  • For Basic Registration- Can be renewed in 7 days. 
  • For Central or State Licenses - This can take around 30-60 days.

List of Essential Documents:

  • Latest photograph (Passport-sized)
  • ID proof (voter ID/Aadhaar Card)
  • PAN Card
  • Address Proof (Mobile/ Electricity/Gas Bill)
  • Copy of Rent Agreement and NOC (if rented) or Copy of Property papers (if owned)
  • Details of Proprietor/Partners/Directors/Society Members 
  • Partnership Deed/ MOA/AOA of the firm
  • NOC from the manufacturer 
  • NOC issued by Municipality or local body
  • Certificate issued by DGFT
  • Self-declaration regarding Food Safety Management System
  • Nomination of a person (along with resolution by the board)
  • Declaration form

The FBOs must get their license renewed by filing all the required documents along with the fees within the specified time duration to avoid penalty, also they must comply with all other conditions as laid down by the law to ensure proper food safety standards. It must also be noted that FBOs can continue their business operations if they have submitted the renewal application.
