How to fill ITR - 4 form?

ITR 4 means an income tax return form for those taxpayers who have opted for the presumptive income scheme under sections 44AD, 44ADA, and 44AE; and whose income does not exceed rupees fifty lakhs. This return can be filed with the Income‐tax Department in either online or offline (physical) means. Form ITR 4 download can be done through the Income-tax portal by clicking on the “Forms/Download” option.

How to file ITR 4 Online for AY 2021-22?

Form ITR 4 SUGAM is applicable for Assessment Year 2021‐22 only, as it relates to income earned during the Financial Year 2020‐21. The procedure for filing is mentioned below:

Step 1: Visit the Income tax e-Filing portal.

Step 2: Log in through user ID and password.

Step 3: Select the e-File option. Then Income Tax Returns, then File Income Tax Return.

Step 4: Select 2021 – 22 in the Assessment Year drop-down menu, then click Continue.

Step 5: Select “Online” in the Mode of Filing option, then click on the "Proceed” button.

  • Click Resume Filing: if Income Tax Return already filled and it is pending for submission
  • Click Start New Filing: If you want to discard the saved return, prepare the new return.

Step 6: Need to select one option from “Individual/HUF/Firm LLP” as Status applicable.

Step 7: After selection, click “Continue”.

Step 8: In the next step, the user can select from 2 options.

  • Help me decide which ITR Form to file; or
  • I know which ITR Form I need to file.

Step 9: Read the instructions, collect the required documents and click on the "Let's Get Started” button.

Step 10: Select the appropriate options by clicking on the checkboxes applicable and clicking the “Continue” option.

Step 11: The pre-filled data will appear on the screen. The user needs to carefully check all the given details and make modifications if required.

Step 12: Then, enter the other remaining data (as required).

Step 13: Click the "Confirm” button given at the end of each section after filling in all the details.

Step 14: The user needs to provide income and deduction information in provided sections. 

Step 15: Click the “Proceed” option after filling in all the details in provided sections.

  • If there is tax liability: A summary of tax computation will appear on the screen along with “Pay Later” and “Pay Now” options at the bottom of the page.
  • If there is no tax liability or if there is a refund: A page will appear with options “Preview” and “Return Summary”.

Step 16: After clicking the "Preview and Submit” option, enter Place and check the declaration box and click Proceed to Validation.

Step 17: After validation is successful, click Proceed to Verification.

  • If there are mistakes in the return, the system will show the list of errors that needs to be corrected
  • If there are no errors, proceed to the e-Verify return option.

Step 18: After the return is Verified, a message will pop up showing the Transaction ID and Acknowledgment Number. 

Step 19: The user will receive a confirmation message on the registered mobile number and email ID.
