How to Register a DIN Number and Perform a Search?

DIN number also known as the Director Identification Number is the unique 8 digit number that is required for any existing or future Director of a Company. DIN (Director Identification Number) has been started under the Companies Amendment Act 2006. In the following article we will have a look at the procedure to get DIN registration and DIN Number Search.

DIN Number Registration

Any person intending to register a Private Limited Company or Limited Company or One Person Company (OPC) in India needs to get a DIN number and becomes a part of Board of Directors. The shareholders of the Company do not require a DIN number.

DIN number can also be used for getting Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) or an existing DPIN (Designated Partner Identification Number) can be used for registering a Company.

Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

Prior to getting a DIN number a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) must be obtained in the name of DIN applicant. 

The Digital Signature Certificate has a validity of 1 to 2 years and is issued in form of a USB token. The applicant must submit a signed DSC application along with the identity and address proof of the applicant to get a Digital Signature Certificates.

Copy of address and identity poof needs to be self-attested before submitting. For foreign nationals or non-resident Indians (NRIs) the attestation of the copy of identity and address proof needs to be done by the Indian Embassy in the Country.

DIN Number Registration

The DIN application can be filed with MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) once the DSC is obtained by the applicant.

It is important to obtain DSC before DIN because DIN application needs to be electronically signed with the Digital Signature Certificate. The DIN application must be submitted along with an applicant’s photo and identity and address proof.

DIN number is immediately provided once the DIN application is filed and approved. The DIN cell requests prerequisite documents in case there is an inaccuracy with the DIN application.

Once the formalities are done and the right documents are submitted the DIN cell provides a DIN number within 2-3 days.

There are absolutely no formalities or expiry dates with DIN number to retain the validity of DIN number. An initiation in form of DIN allotment letter is provided once DIN is allotted. There are no other documents sent upon allocation.
