Intelligent Remote Racking Device

Abstract: In order to mitigate the likelihood of injury or death further, personnel must perform racking operations a safe distance from the circuit breaker, i.e. remotely. NFPA70E, NEC_attempts to address these issues, however, this reference and other references in the related art have not adequately solved the need for a simple and effective apparatus for remotely racking circuit breakers. Thus, a need exists for more versatile apparatus and method for remotely racking of Circuit breakers. IRRD (Intelligent Remote Racking Device) used in accordance With this invention comprises of motor compartment. A motor with vertical support with a threaded rod fixed on racking device. Motor base plate is engaged with vertical support system. Vertical support provides guidance to base plate for moving along vertical axis. Threaded rod is provided with handle at top of IRRD by means to move motor base plate along with motor with vertical axis. Motor is provide with a shaft with adaptor structure. Adaptor is fixed on the shaft at breaker side and encoder is fixed at another side of the shaft. The adaptor structure is fabricated and arranged to be coupled with horizontal shaft of drive box of circuit breaker.

3. PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification describes the invention that relates to the remotely racking system for circuit breaker, particularly subject matter including a force amplifying or levering mechanism for locking the breaker in each of its plurality of positions automatically Without the need for operator intervention to determine how far the circuit breaker must be displaced to place it in the desire position.

4.DESCRIPTION :
In utility and industrial applications, circuit breakers and contractors are utilized to establish electrical circuits. From time to time, maintenance requirements (eg repair, replacement, or load control) necessitate racking operations to disconnect ("rack out") and connect ("rack in") these breakers or contactors. During these operations, electrical circuits may short-circuit and produce a dangerous condition known as an arc flash. Arc-flash occurs When an electric current passes through air When insulation or isolation between electrified conductors is insufficient to Withstand the applied voltage. During an arc flash, temperatures rapidly escalate causing conductors to melt, vaporize, and expand to several thousand times their normal volume, Which generates a pressure Wave carrying molten metal capable of hitting surfaces With forces of several hundred pounds per square inch. As a result, maintenance personnel must possess a means and method for safely performing racking operations to prevent injury or death from an arc-flash. In the past, maintenance personnel have utilized personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce exposure to potential arc flash hazards. However, PPE alone Will not eliminate the risk of injury or death because personnel are still in close proximity to the circuit breaker during racking operations.
In order to mitigate the likelihood of injury or death further, personnel must perform racking operations a safe distance from the circuit breaker, i.e. remotely. NFPA70E,NEC attempts to address these issues, however, this reference and other references in the related art have not adequately solved the need for a simple and effective apparatus for remotely racking circuit breakers. Thus, a need exists for more versatile apparatus and method for remotely racking of Circuit breakers.
IRRD (Intelligent Remote Racking Device) used in accordance With this invention comprises of motor compartment. Motor compartment consist of vertical support with a threaded rod. Vertical support fixed on racking device. Motor base plate is engaged with vertical support system. Low friction Base plate fixed with nut and which is engaged with vertical threaded rod. Vertical support provides guidance to base plate for moving along vertical axis. Threaded rod is provided with handle at top of IRRD by means to move motor base plate along with motor with vertical axis.
A motor is fixed on base plate. Motor is preferably a three phase geared motor. Motor is provide with a shaft with adaptor structure. Adaptor is fixed on the shaft at breaker side and encoder is fixed at another side of the shaft. The adaptor structure is fabricated and arranged to be coupled with horizontal shaft of drive box of circuit breaker.
IRRD comprises with electronics control compartment. Electronics compartment consist of MCB ( miniature circuit breaker ),VFD ( Variable Frequency Drive ) , PLC ( programmable logic controller ) , relays, SMPS ( Switched mode power supply ).a control box connected to the electronic compartment through communication cable. Control box consist of touch pad HMI (human machine interface). Gear motor controlled from control box .in one embodiment of the invention motor and electronic compartment connected to control box by a 10 meter communication cable. Electronic compartment utilizes 230V AC. 230v AC converted in 3 phase 230V AC and connected to motor.230 v AC converted to 24v DC by means of SMPS and connected to encoder, PLC and HMI.
IRRD have facility of ON/OFF timing testing of breaker. Electronics control compartment has three connector. Four wire, Three wire and two wire female connector mounted on the side wall of the compartment.
IRMDf'eoTnprises with ©able^compartmenfe- Cable? compartment consist of 2-3 metre power cable, HMI with 10 meter control cable, three testing cable.
Racking device fixed on four wheel. Front wheels are non-swing type and back wheels

enable turning of racking unit as required by operator. Back wheels has breaking facility to hold device at fix position.
Refer to figure no 1,
Handle (1) is provided on top of the panel and is engaged with Treaded rod (2). When handle rotate in clock wise direction, motor base plate (3) moves in upward direction. Motor base plate engaged with vertical support structure (4). Vertical support structure is fixed with motor compartment (5). Three phase Motor (6) is fixed on base plate which moves up and down as handle rotate clockwise and anticlockwise respectively.
Refer to figure no 2,
HMI(7) is connected to electronic control compartment (8).Operator gives common for rack in /rack out of circuit breaker through HMI. Torque and speed profile is set in PLC and VFD accordingly motor shaft (9) rotates in clock wise direction/anticlockwise. Adaptor structure (10) is fixed with motor shaft and get engaged with drive box of circuit breaker, which move circuit breaker forward and reverse direction. Encoder (11) is mounted at another end of motor shaft. Encoder gives inputs to PLC for exact position of circuit breaker.
Refer to figure no 3,
Connector points (four wire, three wire, two wire) (12) given on the electronic control compartment. Connector points are used for time test of breaker. All the cables kept in cable compartment (13). IRRD mounted on four wheels structure (14). Front 2 wheels are fixed and non-swing type. Back two wheels are swing type.
